Ethiopia is the second most populous nation in Africa and among the top three fastest-growing economies in the world. Yet despite this positive outlook, the country is facing a tragic pediatric crisis with 44,000+ spina bifida and hydrocephalus pregnancies each year.

 

Spina bifida and hydrocephalus are neural tube defects (NTDs) caused by a lack of folic acid in the mother’s diet. These NTDs damage the spinal cord, brain and vital functions of the newly born and cause stillbirths, infant mortality and profound, life-long disability.“At ReachAnother Foundation, we believe that the world is a big village, that we are all connected, and that all lives have equal value. For $150, ReachAnother can support one life-saving surgery in Ethiopia, while the same surgery would cost close to $30,000 in the United States. Our support in Ethiopia has a multiplier effect that enable us to have a greater impact for babies born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.”
